The shooting occurred at a bowling alley, according to the reports shootings were also reported at a local bar and a Walmart distribution center.

Lewiston City Councilman Robert McCarthy said officials had confirmed 18 deaths and several injuries. According to local media, the shootings took place at a bowling alley and at least one other location, a local restaurant and bar, with police saying the gunman was still at large.

It is noteworthy that after this incident the local people also had their reaction. When Kyle Green and his partner learned that a gunman was shooting near their home in Lewiston, Maine, they quietly pulled down the curtains and told their kids it was movie night. After closing all the doors, they sat in front of a TV screen in a dark upstairs bedroom with their two dogs and sleeping children, ages 10 and 12.

The suspect who fired the shots is still absconding. Green, a 40-year-old software engineer, who spoke to AFP in front of his home, said he and his partner "took turns" sleeping to keep watch until the morning. Clearing his throat to hide his emotions, Green asked, "Where is he now...? Is he here? It's a terrible feeling." A woman from the city said, "You know, this doesn't usually happen in Maine. I have lived here my whole life. After this incident, I will never be able to feel as safe as I have before."
