New Delhi: Prime Minister Modi targeted opposition in LokSabha yesterday and then Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram slammed the government for invoking the Public Safety Act against former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah and said detention without charges is the worst abomination in a democracy.

P chidambaram shared his thoughts through social media and his tweet divided netizens into two teams.

Mufti and Abdullah, besides two political stalwarts from the PDP and its arch-rival National Conference, were booked under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) by the administration on Thursday, officials in the union territory said.

In a series of tweets, Chidambaram said, “Shocked and devastated by the cruel invocation of the Public Safety Act against Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and others”.

“Detention without charges is the worst abomination in a democracy. When unjust laws are passed or unjust laws are invoked, what option do the people have than to protest peacefully?” the former home minister tweeted.

Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chidambaram said, “The PM says that protests will lead to anarchy and laws passed by Parliament and legislatures must be obeyed. He has forgotten history and the inspiring examples of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela”. Unjust laws must be opposed through peaceful resistance and civil disobedience. That is satyagraha, he added.

What PM said in LokSabha:

PM said, “The people of India have not only changed the Sarkar. They want the Sarokar to be changed as well. If we had worked according to the old ways and thought processes. Article 370 would never have been history. Muslim women would have kept suffering due to Triple Talaq.

Prime Minister Modi gave reply to opposition who said there were nothing for Farmers in Budget2020. Modi said, The President of India has talked about agriculture and farmer welfare extensively. The issue of higher MSP was pending for decades. We had the honour of solving this long-standing demand. The same applies to crop insurance and irrigation related schemes. The agriculture budget has risen 5 times during our Government’s tenure. PM-KISAN Samman Yojana is transforming the lives of many farmers. Several farmers have benefitted due to this. In this scheme there are no middlemen and no extra file-work.

“There have been statements made by former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir that are not acceptable to us. Who made Kashmir only about land grabbing? Who made Kashmir’s identity only about bombs and guns? Can anyone forget that dark night of January? In reality, Kashmiri identity is closely linked with harmony.”
