New Delhi: The Union Environment Ministry has said that at least 500 people and 100 elephants are killed every year in the country due to fighting between humans and elephants. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that this fight between man and elephant is a serious challenge in conservation of elephants. On the occasion of #WorldElephantDay, we are launching a document based on the best methods of security arrangements to prevent this conflict between humans and elephants.

Also the portal has been launched, in which documents have been released by Ministry of Environment for best practice on human-elephant conflict management. These documents will mention various security arrangements, which will provide ways to prevent conflict between humans and elephants.

We must protect our elephants. The Kerala incident was inhuman and such criminal acts will be dealt with. The ministry and states have zero tolerance approach to such activities and I am sure exemplary punishment will be given to the culprit,” Supriyo said.

“More than 500 human and 100 elephant deaths take place each year due to the conflict. In last five years, the ministry has unleashed a series of activities for the conservation of elephants. More elephant corridors have been identified, budget has been increased by 30 per cent and several committees have also been formed,” said Soumitra Dasgupta.
