Sri Lanka: Motor sports race car ploughs into spectators, 7 people including eight year old girl killed

More than a million fans gathered to watch the race, 'Foxhill Super Cross 2024', organized by the Sri Lanka Army to coincide with the National New Year falling in mid-April.

A car went off the track during a car race in the Central Hills of Sri Lanka on Sunday. At least seven people died due to this and 23 others were injured. Police media spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa said that the seven dead included race marshals and spectators. An eight year old girl has also died in the accident.

More than a million fans gathered to watch the race, 'Foxhill Super Cross 2024', organized by the Sri Lanka Army to coincide with the National New Year falling in mid-April.

The race was held in Diyatalawa, a former garrison town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, where all servicemen undergo military training.

During the New Year holiday season, holidaymakers flock to the Central Hills. Where many competitions like car races and horse races take place.

The Sri Lankan Army last organized the 'Foxhill' race in 2019, but it was abruptly halted following the 2019 Easter attacks across the country.

The race was being held again after five years, but it was suspended again on Sunday after the fatal accident.
