India head coach Gautam Gambhir believes Sanju Samson has the ability to finish a match within the first six overs if he gets going. That’s exactly why India brought him back into the playing XI during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The decision was not about tactics or breaking left-hand combinations. It was simple. India wanted more aggression at the top.

Gambhir says the team’s mindset for the last one and a half years has been clear. Attack early. Score fast. Put pressure from ball one.

Why India Wanted More Firepower At The Top

According to Gambhir, the move to include Samson had nothing to do with matchups against specific bowlers. It wasn’t about avoiding off-spinners or balancing the batting order.

The plan was much more straightforward. India wanted explosive batting during the powerplay.

Gambhir explained that modern T20 cricket demands aggressive starts. If a team dominates the first six overs, the rest of the match often becomes easier. Samson fits perfectly in that plan.

When he attacks, he attacks big. Bowlers feel the pressure instantly.

That is why the team management believed his presence would add something extra to the lineup.

A Dangerous Top Order Combination

Gambhir also spoke about how powerful India’s batting lineup becomes when Samson plays near the top.

Imagine this kind of start. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan opening the innings. Three aggressive players who like to attack from the first ball.

Behind them the middle order looks equally strong. Players like Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and Axar Patel give depth and finishing ability.

With that kind of batting depth, India can keep attacking throughout the innings. That’s the thinking behind the current strategy.

It’s simple cricket logic honestly. If the top order fires, the rest of the lineup can play even more freely.

The Simple Conversation With Samson

Interestingly, Gambhir revealed that Samson didn’t receive any dramatic call about his selection. The conversation was actually very casual.

Both Gambhir and Samson were training in the gym before the match against Zimbabwe. During that session, Gambhir simply told him that he would be playing the next game.

Samson’s reaction was calm. Almost relaxed.

He reportedly said something like, let it come.

That kind of easy communication shows the kind of atmosphere the team management wants. Less pressure, more trust.

Gambhir said many conversations with players happen during practice sessions rather than formal meetings. It keeps things natural.

Backing Young Opener Abhishek Sharma

Gambhir also spoke about young opener Abhishek Sharma, who had a slow start in the tournament.

But the coach was not worried at all.

He reminded everyone that early failures do not mean a player is out of form. Sometimes a batter just hasn’t faced enough balls to settle.

Gambhir even shared his own experience from the 2014 IPL season. He had scored three ducks in a row, and another soon after.

Cricket can be brutal like that sometimes.

His message to Abhishek was simple. Stay fearless. Keep attacking.

Runs Matter Less Than Mindset

Gambhir believes a batter’s form should only be judged after facing 20 to 30 balls in the middle.

If a player gets out quickly before settling, it doesn’t always show the real picture.

In Abhishek’s case, he had barely spent enough time at the crease. So Gambhir encouraged him to stick to his natural style.

The instruction was clear. If you feel like hitting the first ball out of the ground, do it.

But commit to it fully.

Because in Gambhir’s view, what the outside world says about form doesn’t matter much. What really matters is the trust inside the dressing room.

Those teammates. Those coaches. Around thirty people who actually see the work every day.

That’s the only opinion that counts.

And according to Gambhir, the Indian team continues to believe strongly in every player chosen to represent the country in the T20 World Cup.
