Aston Villa, Porto and Midtjylland all secured narrow but important wins in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16. Ollie Watkins scored the decisive goal as Villa defeated Lille in France, while Porto and Midtjylland also managed one-goal advantages. The results mean all three clubs now head into the second leg with a slight edge, though the ties are still far from finished.
Aston Villa Edge Past Lille in France
Aston Villa managed a hard-fought victory against Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. It was not a flashy match. Actually quite tense most of the time. Both teams played carefully, waiting for mistakes.
The breakthrough arrived in the 61st minute. Ollie Watkins rose above the defenders and sent a looping header into the net. The goal looked simple, but it mattered a lot. In knockout football, sometimes one chance decides everything.
Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also played a key role in the match. Lille pushed forward several times, trying to find an equaliser. Martínez however made a number of sharp saves and kept the score intact. Because of that effort, Villa left France with a clean sheet and an advantage.
This win also carried a small piece of history for the English club. It was Aston Villa’s first ever victory in France despite several previous attempts. A long wait, finally finished.
Another Milestone for Unai Emery
The win meant something special for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery too. It marked his 100th victory as the club’s manager. Even more impressive, he reached that number faster than any other Villa coach before him.
Emery is known for his success in European competitions. Many fans believe his experience could help Villa go deep in the tournament this season. Still, the job isn’t done yet. The second leg at Villa Park will decide everything.
A one-goal lead feels good, but football can change quickly. Everyone knows that.
Porto Take Control Against Stuttgart
Portuguese club Porto also secured a narrow advantage in their Round of 16 clash against Stuttgart. The match had plenty of energy early on, especially in the first half.
Porto created several chances and nearly scored midway through the opening period when William Gomes struck the woodwork. The pressure continued to build. Soon after, two quick goals in seven minutes gave the Portuguese side control of the game.
Terem Moffi scored with a powerful strike before Rodrigo Mora added another with an improvised finish. For a moment it looked like Porto might run away with the match.
But Stuttgart responded just before half-time. Deniz Undav produced a neat half-volley to reduce the deficit. That goal kept the tie alive and made sure the second leg will still be very competitive.
Midtjylland Surprise Nottingham Forest Again
Danish club Midtjylland also grabbed a slim first-leg advantage, defeating Nottingham Forest in a dramatic encounter. The match was played under heavy rain, which made conditions tricky for both teams.
Forest attacked again and again, trying to break through the defence. But Midtjylland stayed disciplined. Their goalkeeper Elias Rafn Olafsson delivered a strong performance, saving several long-range attempts.
The winning moment came late in the match. Substitute Guesung Cho scored with a looping header in the 80th minute. It was enough to secure the victory.
Interestingly, Midtjylland had already beaten Nottingham Forest earlier in the competition. So this result made it two wins against the English side this season.
Second Leg Battles Still Wide Open
Even though Aston Villa, Porto and Midtjylland now hold first-leg leads, the Round of 16 ties are still very much alive. A single goal advantage is useful, but it rarely guarantees safety.
The second legs will take place next week. Teams trailing by one goal will push harder. The pressure will rise. Fans expect more drama, maybe extra time too if scores level out.
European knockout football often works like this. One night you celebrate a small win. Next week everything can flip completely. And that is exactly why the Europa League remains so unpredictable and exciting.
