The Indian men’s basketball team is finally heading back home after being stuck in Doha for nearly ten days. The players had travelled to Qatar for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, but rising geopolitical tensions in the region disrupted international flights. Because of that sudden situation, the entire Indian contingent remained stranded in the Qatari capital before arrangements were made for their return.

The good news is that the team is now safely travelling back to India. Officials from the Basketball Federation of India confirmed the development and thanked authorities who helped during the difficult situation.

Why The Indian Team Was Stranded In Doha

The Indian squad reached Doha earlier for the Asian qualifiers linked to the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. Everything was expected to go normally. But international developments in the region created problems with airspace and commercial flight operations.

Because of the tensions, several flights were either cancelled or delayed for days. Travel options suddenly became very limited. The Indian players and staff found themselves waiting in Doha without a clear departure schedule.

For athletes who usually move from tournament to tournament, such delays can feel frustrating. Still, safety always comes first in situations like this.

Support From Qatar And Indian Authorities

During those ten days, the Qatar Basketball Federation stepped in to assist the stranded team. Officials arranged hotel accommodation and other logistical support for the Indian delegation.

Food, transportation, and security were also taken care of. That support helped the players remain comfortable while waiting for a safe travel option.

At the same time, the Embassy of India in Doha stayed in constant contact with the Basketball Federation of India and other authorities. Efforts were focused on finding the safest and quickest way for the players to return home.

Sports federations often depend on diplomatic coordination during unexpected travel disruptions like this one.

The Long Journey Back To India

Eventually a travel plan was arranged, though it required multiple steps. On March 8, 2026, the team first travelled by road from Doha to Dammam in Saudi Arabia. That road journey became necessary because flights from Qatar were still limited.

From Dammam, the Indian contingent split into two groups due to restricted seat availability on flights. One group travelled from Dammam to Jeddah and then continued onward to Mumbai.

The second group boarded a direct flight from Dammam to Lucknow. According to the federation, the Mumbai group landed shortly after midnight while the Lucknow group arrived early in the morning.

It was a long journey, but at least the players were finally heading home after days of uncertainty.

Basketball Federation Of India Responds

The Basketball Federation of India confirmed that its senior officials remained in touch with several organisations during the crisis. These included FIBA Asia, the Government of India, and the Indian Embassy in Doha.

Their main concern was the safety and well-being of the players and staff members. Sports bodies often face unexpected travel challenges during international competitions, and quick coordination becomes crucial.

In its statement, the federation also expressed gratitude to everyone who helped solve the situation.

Global Support During The Crisis

Officials specifically thanked FIBA Asia, the Qatar Basketball Federation, and Indian embassies in both Qatar and Saudi Arabia for their assistance.

Their cooperation made it possible to organise accommodation, coordinate travel permissions, and eventually arrange flights for the players.

Moments like this remind people that sports diplomacy matters too. Even during tense global situations, cooperation between organisations can help athletes return home safely.

A Difficult Trip Finally Ending

For the players, the experience must have felt unusual. Athletes prepare for matches, training sessions, and tournaments, not unexpected travel complications lasting days.

But the situation now seems resolved. The Indian men’s basketball team is returning safely, and officials say everyone remained secure throughout the period.

Sometimes sports stories are not about scores or trophies. Sometimes they’re about resilience, patience, and getting home after a long unexpected detour.
