Modi, Rahul shake hands in Lok Sabha

The occasion was the election of Om Birla as the Lok Sabha speaker. When Om Birla was elected Speaker, Modi and Rahul Gandhi went to his seat and congratulated him.

It was indeed a historic scene indicative of the strength of the Parliamentary democracy in the country when prime minister Narendra Modi and leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi, who had a bitter exchange of words during the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, shook hands in the House.

All the members of the House, cutting across party lines, clapped as the two arch rivals warmly shook hands. The occasion was the election of Om Birla as the Lok Sabha speaker. When Om Birla was elected Speaker, Modi and Rahul Gandhi went to his seat and congratulated him. During this, PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi shook hands. It was a historic moment.

After reaching here, PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi once again congratulated Om Birla on being elected Speaker and shook hands.

Modi had moved a motion to elect BJP MP Om Birla as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. On the election of Om Birla as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that we believe that you (Om Birla) will continue to guide all of us for the next five years.

When the proceedings of the Lok Sabha started at 11 am on Wednesday, first of all the names of those newly elected MPs were called to take oath, who have not yet taken the oath of membership of Parliament. After this, the Protem Speaker of the House Bhartrihari Mahtab told the House that he has received 16 notices regarding the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker. He first took the name of PM Modi to present the proposal. After this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the name of Om Birla as the new Lok Sabha Speaker in the House, which was supported by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

On the other hand, from the opposition alliance, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) MP Arvind Sawant proposed the name of K. Suresh for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker in the House, which was supported by RSP leader NK Premachandran. Many other leaders from the opposition parties also proposed the name of K. Suresh in the House and many MPs supported him.

The Protem Speaker of the House Bhartrihari Mahtab announced the election of Om Birla as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha by voice vote. Birla was elected Speaker by voice vote as the opposition parties did not demand division of votes.
