This information was given in a media report. The report said that in a recent information given by the Ministry of Railways to the Cabinet Secretary, it was said that Indian Railways will install the armor security system on 44,000 km of track in the next five years.

The railways is currently working on installing the armor system on the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes. Tenders for installing an armor system on an additional 6,000 km track can be issued by the end of this year. During a review meeting focused on armor 4.0, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav instructed the officials that after its preparation, all locomotives should be equipped with this system immediately.

What is Railway's armor?

The armor is an automatic security system. It protects trains on a track from any accident. Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. It has been designed by Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) in collaboration with three companies to increase the safety of Indian Railways. It uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which are installed on tracks and railway yards. It keeps an eye on the condition of the track and the direction of the train. In case of any emergency like brake failure or the driver ignoring the signal, it gets activated automatically and helps in averting the accident by stopping the locomotive.
