US Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and pressed Israel to increase the flow of aid to ease the "inhumane" conditions and "humanitarian disaster" facing the Palestinian people. Harris's comments were among the sharpest ever by a senior US government leader, calling on Israel to improve conditions in Gaza and call for a ceasefire.
The Vice President was addressing an event in Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the anniversary of "Bloody Sunday". During this time she urged Hamas to accept an agreement to release the hostages which would trigger a 6-week ceasefire and would be based on providing more aid from Israel.
Harris said, "People are dying of hunger in Gaza. The conditions are inhumane and our simple humanity compels us to take action." "The Israeli government must do more to increase the flow of aid and there will be no excuses."
Israel boycotted Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo on Sunday after Hamas rejected a demand for a full list of names of hostages still alive, according to an Israeli newspaper. Harris said, "Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well you have an agreement in front of you and as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that agreement." "Let's achieve a ceasefire. Let's reunite the hostages with their families and let's provide immediate relief to the people of Gaza."
