A strong earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit Japan, resulting in tsunami waves. Tsunami waves 1.2 meters high have hit the coasts of Japan. Local media reported that an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude was recorded in north central Japan on Monday.

According to Reuters report, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning in the coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures. According to the weather agency, due to the earthquake, waves up to 5 meters high are reaching Noto in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Amidst the fear of tsunami waves up to 5 meters high in Japan, people living in coastal areas have been instructed to move to safe places. There is panic among the people. Meanwhile, rescue teams have also reached the tsunami affected area.

According to a report by Japan's public broadcaster NHK, waves more than 1 meter high rose off the coast of Wajima city in Ishikawa prefecture. Hokuriku Electric Power said it was investigating any irregularities at its nuclear power plants, NHK reported.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said dangerous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometers (190 miles) of the epicenter off the Japan coast. The JMA said a strong earthquake was felt in the Noto region on the Sea of Japan side of Japan's main island of Honshu, starting with a 5.7-magnitude quake at 4:06 p.m. local time.

This was followed by an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude at 4:10 pm, an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude at 4:18 pm, an earthquake of 4.5 magnitude at 4:23 pm, an earthquake of 4.6 magnitude at 4:29 pm and an earthquake of 4.8 magnitude at 4:32 pm. The US Geological Survey said that another earthquake of magnitude 6.2 occurred soon after.

"We realize that your home, your belongings are all precious to you, but your life is more important than everything else, so get to as high ground as possible," an anchor on Japan's news channel NHK told viewers."

Japan has strict construction regulations aimed at ensuring that buildings can withstand strong earthquakes, and regularly conducts emergency exercises to prepare for a larger shock. But the country is haunted by memories of a massive 9.0 magnitude undersea earthquake off northeastern Japan in March 2011, which triggered a tsunami that left about 18,500 people dead or missing.
