Bangladesh landslides kill 35, rescue operation underway
Dhaka: At least 35 people were killed in landslides triggered due to heavy rains in Bangladesh on Tuesday.
Director General of the Bangladesh Disaster Management Department (DMD), Reaz Ahmed said, "We have information that at least 35 people died in three districts."
An official in Chittagong said, "The military, police and fire service personnel have joined rescue efforts since early Tuesday."
Twenty four deceased out of 35 were from Rangamati district, the worst-affected area. Among the deceased, several of them were women and children.
Influenced by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, rains have lashed the three districts since Monday.
Dhaka's flood forecasting centre said that the water level in all the major rivers has risen while some were already flowing over the danger mark.
It may be mentioned that at least 53 people had lost their lives after heavy rains triggered landslides and floods in the south-east Bangladesh.
