US president Joe Biden has sharply criticised forcing a pregnant woman to leave Texas for abortion. He called it “disgraceful.”

Texas courts said that the woman's pregnancy was risky, that is why they could not give her permission for abortion. If she wants to get an abortion, she will have to leave Texas.

"No woman should be forced to go to court or flee her home state just to get the health care she needs, but that's exactly what happened in Texas, thanks to Republican elected officials," President Joe Biden said in White. It's very insulting."

31 year old Kate Cox, mother of two children, is more than 20 weeks pregnant. She suffers from a rare genetic disorder. Doctors say that if the abortion attempt fails, Cox's uterus may burst, which could jeopardize her ability to have a child in the future as well as her life.

The woman sued the state last week over Texas's strict abortion laws and won the case, which was initially ruled an abortion by a Travis County judge. But state Attorney General Ken Paxton immediately appealed to the Texas Supreme Court. Paxton threatened to sue any doctor who performed an abortion. After which, on Monday, Cox left Texas demanding an emergency abortion. A few hours later, the Texas Supreme Court issued an order siding with the government and overturning the lower court's decision.

The US Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion nationwide in June 2022, a decision that left states free to make their own laws around the procedure. The 2022 decision took effect immediately following the Texas state's "trigger" ban, which bans abortion even in cases of rape or incest. Texas also has a law that allows private citizens to sue anyone who provides or assists in an abortion.

Texas doctors found guilty of performing abortions could face up to 99 years in prison, a fine of up to $100,000 and have their medical licenses revoked. The state allows abortion only in cases where the mother's life is in danger. Doctors say that this wording is not clear, because of this they can face legal consequences on medical decisions.
