Baghdad/Washington: United States President Barack Obama and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will devise a strategy for the upcoming offensive aimed at taking back the northern city of Mosul from Islamic State (IS). They will meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.

Apparently, Iraq has become the bright spot for the US President’s campaign against IS as the civil war continues to plague efforts to overcome the terror outfit in neighbouring Syria whereas in Iraq, Abadi’s forces have been helping the US-led coalition to wrest back the regions held by the terrorist group.

Other highlights:

  • Mosul is Iraq’s second largest city as well as IS stronghold.
  • An intense combat to expel IS from Mosul is likely to ramp up in the next few months.
  • Recently, the forces succeeded in reclaiming other Iraqi cities including Ramadi and Fallujah.
  • “Approximately, one million people could be displaced during the Mosul war,” UN officials say.
