Massive fire breaks out in Iraq's university hostel, 14 people die tragically

A massive fire broke out in a university dormitory near Iraq's northern city of Erbil. About 14 people died and 18 were injured in this accident.

This incident happened on Friday evening, according to the local media reports.

Kamram Mulla Mohammad, head of Soran's health directorate, has confirmed the incident. Mullah Mohammad said that a fire broke out in a building (hostel) in Soran, a small town east of Erbil.

According to local media, the fire tenders had to work hard to put out the fire. Police have registered the case and investigation is underway, reports added.

So far 14 people have died in a massive fire that broke out on Friday evening in the university located in Soran, a small town in Erbil in the northern region of Iraq.

As many as 18 people have suffered burn injuries in this accident, who have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The condition of many of the injured was stated to be criticial and as such the toll could go up. The fire was brought under control by Friday night.

According to local news agency Rudaw, initial investigation has suggested short circuit was the cause of the fire. Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has formed an investigation committee regarding this incident.

Iraq has been in turmoil since the ouster and subsequent hanging of former ruler and dictator Saddam Hussein after the US invasion. The country has witnesses sectarian clashes and terror attacks in the past.
