Jan 07, 2024: In a significant move, the Maldives government has suspended three ministers—Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid—over derogatory remarks made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversial comments sparked a massive backlash, prompting former presidents, including Mohammad Nasheed and Ibrahim Solih, to demand swift action against the ministers.

The Maldives government distanced itself from the remarks earlier in the day, categorizing them as 'personal opinions.' India had firmly expressed its disapproval, denouncing junior minister Mariyam Shiuna's comments as uncalled for and unacceptable.

Former President Ibrahim Solih condemned the use of hateful language against India, emphasizing the need to preserve the longstanding friendship between the two countries. Additionally, former Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid called for stern action against the ministers, describing their comments as reprehensible and odious.

The derogatory remarks have triggered widespread criticism on social media, with even celebrities, including film stars, calling out Maldivian leaders for their negative rhetoric against PM Modi.

The timing of these unsavory remarks coincides with Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu's visit to Beijing to seek funds. President Muizzu, a Sunni Salafi Muslim leader elected in November, had campaigned on a platform of removing Indian troops from the Maldives, making the current situation more sensitive.
