Magnitude-5.9 earthquake hits Japans Fukushima prefecture

Tokyo: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck off Japan's Fukushima prefecture at 11:56 p.m. local time, Japan Meteorological Agency said on Friday.

The temblor was centred off the shore of Fukushima prefecture in eastern Japan, with the epicentre at a latitude of 37.1 degrees north and a longitude of 141.2 degrees east and at depth of 50 km.

The earthquake logged five minus on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at seven in some parts of Fukushima prefecture.

So far no major damage or injuries were reported and no tsunami warning has been issued.
