Tripoli: Forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya on Saturday launched an attack on the Islamic State (IS) extremists in the country’s coastal city of Sirte, official sources said.

Backed by weeks of the United States air strikes, the forces have recaptured all the parts, regarded as the IS-stronghold. The incident is believed to be a huge setback to the terror outfit which wants to expand its self-proclaimed caliphate outside Iraq and Syria.

“The battle has begun and we are set to attack the last of Daesh’s positions where the Jihadists are cornered,” said GNA-backed combatant.
