New Zealand's PM John Key announces his resignation

Wellington (New Zealand): New Zealand Prime Minister John Key stunned the nation announcing that he would be resigning after serving eight years as a leader. He made this decision at a Press Conference on Monday.

Key said, "Sometimes you've got to make hard decisions to make right decisions. This is the hardest decision I've ever made, and I don't know what I'll do next."

What else John Key said?

  • This was the right time to step down.

  • For me this had been the most remarkable, satisfying and exciting time of my life.But despite the amazing career I have had in politics, I have never seen myself as a career politician.

  • My wife Bronagh had spent many nights and weekends alone. My daughter Stephie and my son Max have transitioned from teenagers to young adults while coping with an extraordinary level of intrusion and pressure because of their father's job.

  • Key further said that the matter will be decided at a National party Meeting on December 12 where he is expected to formally submit his resignation to the Governor General.
