Taliban Afghan announces Haibatullah as its new leader

Kabul: In a recent announcement, the Afghan Taliban has named its new chief as replacement for Mullah Akhtar Mansour, who was recently killed in a US drone strike.

  • The Taliban has confirmed Mansour’s death, naming Maulavi Haibatullah Akhundzada as his successor, said a statement.
  • He was killed in a strike on his car in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Saturday last.
  • Mansour had assumed the leadership in July 2015.
  • He had replaced Taliban founder and spiritual head Mullah Mohammad Omar.
  • Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada was one of the Afghan Taliban's deputy leaders.
