Taliban Afghan announces Haibatullah as its new leader
Kabul: In a recent announcement, the Afghan Taliban has named its new chief as replacement for Mullah Akhtar Mansour, who was recently killed in a US drone strike.
- The Taliban has confirmed Mansour’s death, naming Maulavi Haibatullah Akhundzada as his successor, said a statement.
- He was killed in a strike on his car in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Saturday last.
- Mansour had assumed the leadership in July 2015.
- He had replaced Taliban founder and spiritual head Mullah Mohammad Omar.
- Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada was one of the Afghan Taliban's deputy leaders.
