Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday met the families of 8 Indians who had been sentenced to death in Qatar.

He gave this information through a post on social media platform X. During the meeting, he said it was emphasized that the Government of India is attaching utmost importance to the case and is working expeditiously to stop the execution of all Indians.

After a Qatari court awarded death sentence to eight former Indian Navy personnel, India is considering various options, including appealing in court against the verdict, sources say.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said through a post on social media platform "During the conversation with the families, it was emphasized that the government will continue to make all efforts for their release. We will closely coordinate with the families in that regard."

Sources said various options are being considered to find a solution to the issue. It is learned that India has not yet received a copy of the Qatar court's decision. There has been no comment from Qatar on the court's decision. People familiar with the matter said that New Delhi will move forward on its options after thoroughly examining the decision. Sources said that India can also consider resolving the matter diplomatically or politically.

After the sentence was pronounced by the Qatari court, the Foreign Ministry had expressed surprise and objection to this decision. The ministry said that it is shocked by this decision and is exploring legal options. Let us tell you that the former Indian Navy personnel include Captain Saurabh Vashishtha, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal and Sailor Ragesh.
