Washington: The Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has decided to support the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream scheme Digital India. Zuckerberg has invested in an Indian startup, BYJU, which teaches kids with a mobile app.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a charitable organisation of Zuckerberg has invested almost $50 million in the project.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is a company that the Facebook CEO owns with his wife Priscilla Chan and this is the second investment they have made. The organisation had earlier invested $24 million in Andela, an African startup, which teaches people to generate programs through coding.

“I’m optimistic about personalised learning and the difference it can make for students everywhere,” Zuckerberg posted on his Facebook page and said, “That’s why it’s a major focus of our education efforts, and why we’re looking forward to working with companies like BYJU’s to get these tools into the hands of more students and teachers around the world.”

What is BYJU:

  • BYJU is a mobile application that teaches subjects like Math and Science through videos and pictures.
  • Founded in 2008 by Serial CAT Topper Byju Raveendran, the app contains syllabus starting from class 6th to the preparation courses for various competitive exams like JEE, IAS, CAT, IITJEE and GMAT.
  • The technology based Education Company has over 20,000 enrolments in the current year. It has also recently tied-up with the electronic giant Samsung.
