6.5 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesian island, 25 dead

At least 25 people were dead and dozen were feared trapped in the debris after a strong earthquake struck of the Sumatra Island in Indonesia on Wednesday.

Jakarta (Indonesia): At least 25 people were dead and dozen were feared trapped in the debris after a strong earthquake struck of the Sumatra Island in Indonesia on Wednesday. The magnitude of earthquake was measured 6.5 on richer scale. It hit just north of the small town of Reuleuet, said the US geological survey stating that there was no Tsunami alert.

According to deputy chief of Pidie Jaya:

  • Pidie Jaya was the region hit hardest by the quake.
  • 25 have died so far, based on data from the hospital. Some of the fatalities are children.

What local officials said?

  • The quake struck at dawn.
  • Some Muslim region were preparing for morning prayers.
  • the patients were taken to the neighbouring district as the hospital here could not accommodate everyone.
  • Mosques, homes and shops were flattened in the quake.
  • Some people are still trapped inside shops. We are trying to evacuate them using heavy machines and by hands.
