New Delhi: Oxford virologist Eris Katjorakis has warned policy makers around the world regarding the Corona pandemic or covid-19. He said that he is disappointed when policy makers use the word 'Covid-19 Endemic', expressing their intention to do nothing further about the Covid-19 pandemic.

Oxford virologist on corona pandemic:

Referring to the development journey of Coronavirus, Prof. Katjorakis has warned that more dangerous forms may emerge in the future. He has given this warning in an article published in the prestigious journal 'Nature'. Pro. Katjorakis says that it would be wrong to say that covid-19 will soon turn from a pandemic to a local disease and it will not be difficult to treat.

He said that the word endemic is being misused the most instead of pandemic. This does not mean that the corona virus will be eradicated naturally. Eris Katjorakis is Professor of Viral Evolution and Genomics at Oxford University.

Pro. Katjorakis in his article explains what is meant by endemic in epidemiological context. He said that when a disease reaches an endemic state, it limits the number of people it can infect. The common cold is endemic. Similarly, there were also malaria, polio and smallpox, but after the introduction of the vaccine, they became endemic.

A disease can be both epidemic and local. For example, six lakh people lost their lives in 2020 due to malaria. In the same year, TB also killed 1.5 million people. Being endemic does not mean that an epidemic or disease has been brought under control by vaccine development and life has returned to normal. Its lethal variants may keep coming in the future as well.
