New Delhi: The four Indian nationals who died in Canada have been identified. These four Indians had reportedly died of cold while trying to cross the border between Canada and the US. The Indian High Commission in Canada said that the authorities here have confirmed the identity of the family of four Indians, including a child.

Indian family identified:

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Indian High Commission said that the Canadian authorities have identified four bodies as Jagdish Baldevbhai Patel (male), age 39, Vaishaliben Jagdishkumar Patel (female), age 37, Vihangi Jagdishkumar Patel (female), age 11 and Dharmik Jagdishkumar Patel (Male), age as three years.

The High Commission said in a statement, "The bodies of four people, including an infant, were recovered following the tragic death of four people, including an infant, near the Canada-US border in Manitoba on January 19, 2022. Canadian officials have confirmed the identities of the four dead. All four were Indian citizens. The relatives of the deceased have been informed. Indian High Commission officials are also in touch with the relatives of the deceased and are providing all consular assistance."

All were residents of Gujarat

The High Commission said that the families of the deceased were residents of Gujarat and they died due to extreme cold. The Indian High Commission further said in its statement that the Canadian authorities have also informed after medical examination that depending on the circumstances, all the people died due to exposure to the external environment. It is probing whether four members of a family from the state had taken the help of local agents.

The High Commission said the tragic death of a four-member family has focused attention on the need to ensure that migration and mobility are made safe and legal so that such tragedies do not recur.

In this matter, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau said that this is shocking news. It is really sad to see a family die like this. Worse still, people are taking advantage of their compulsion to carry out human trafficking. That is why we are doing everything possible to discourage people from crossing the border irregularly or illegally. We know that there are great risks in doing so.
