Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told through his social media account that government offices, including police headquarters in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, are now under its control. During the last two decades, the Taliban had a strong hold on Helmand, but in the past, it was under the control of Afghan soldiers. Mujahid also claimed possession of terrorists in all parts of Kandahar. A video of Taliban militants roaming the city went viral.

Sputnik, citing a Taliban statement, said the police headquarters in Herat had also been captured. People present on the spot told that no one opposed them when Taliban fighters passed by Herat's Jama Masjid, firing bullets and shouting slogans. Government buildings remained vacant. The Taliban is considering the easy capture of the country's number three city as its biggest success. This city is said to be very old.

News reports says that the Taliban had entered the city of Kandahar. Heavy fighting was going on between the rebels and government forces within the city limits. Earlier in the day Ghazni City, the capital of Ghazni province, was also captured. With the capture of the city, the Taliban have moved closer to the national capital, Kabul. Ghazni is just 130 km away from Kabul. The Taliban now control 11 of the country's 34 provinces. The fight over the occupation of many other cities has intensified.

The situation in the war-torn country of Afghanistan worsened as soon as the withdrawal of American troops began on May 1.
