UP govt makes helmets compulsory for pillion riders

Lucknow: In the wake of ensuring safety for those commuting on two-wheelers, Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday made helmets compulsory for pillion riders. The decision was taken during a meeting of cabinet ministers chaired by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Highlights from Akhilesh Yadav’s Cabinet Meeting

  • Cabinet has approved a proposal to amend rule 201 of UP Motor vehicles regulation-1998
  • Pillion riders now will have to wear helmets while commuting on two wheelers
  • Aviation policy amended. Now 18-20 seater aircraft could be used for inter-state transport
  • Travel fare will be decided by a committee of Director General, Tourism
  • Aid given to minority community living below poverty line for marriage of their daughters will be increased from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000
  • Process of providing aid will be made online
