First of its kind initiative: UP DGP, Twitter India announce #UPPOL17

Lucknow: In a novel initiative, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday created #UPPOL17, a new hashtag on Twitter handle of UP Police (@UPPolice), to facilitate the people to lodge their complaints related to violation of election code of conduct across the state.

An announcement to this effect was made by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Javeed Ahmed in the presence of Twitter India CEO Raheel Khursheed. The hashtag was finalised among 500 suggestions invited by UP police on Twitter and Facebook.

The UP Police which has already been running its twitter handle with great success and as many as 36,000 cases were solved through the micro blogging site, the DGP claimed. ''It will help muster the election related complaints on a common platform which in turn redress those in an expeditious manner, '' the DGP said.

According to Javeed, it was deemed necessary to have a hashtag because of a huge number of election related complaints being lodged everyday and for twitter friendly persons, this platform will further ease the process of filing of complaints. The complaints to be filed will have location and timing which will subsequently be verified and acted upon by the police of different districts.

It may be mentioned that Uttar Pradesh is going to assembly polls in seven phase starting from February 11.
