Kalyan Singh Dies at 89: PM Modi, Rajnath Singh offer tributes to BJP veteran

Kalyan Singh, an OBC leader, was a cadre's delight, recalled former minister Rajendra Tiwari, who was UP BJP secretary when Singh was the state party chief in 1984.

Lucknow: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday, paid floral tributes to former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, who left to heavenly abode on Saturday night at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) here. The veteran leader headed the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh (UP) in 1991 and was the chief minister when the Babri mosque was demolished in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992. Paying tribute to the senior politician, Uttar Pradesh BJP also shared an old clip where Singh is seen pledging his allegiance to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"Kalyan Singh Ji made Jan Kalyan his life Mantra. He worked for the development of UP and the nation. He became synonymous with honesty and good administration," Says PM Modi as he pays his last respects.

Kalyan Singh dies at 89

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rajnath Singh and JP Nadda are among BJP's top brass who visited Kalyan Singh's residence to pay their last respects. Kalyan Singh died due to sepsis and multi-organ failure. The mortal remains of Singh will be brought to the UP Assembly at 11am and the BJP Office at 12.30pm.

BJP president JP Nadda is likely to participate in the last procession from BJP Office in Lucknow to the airport at 2pm from where the body will be shifted to Aligarh at 3pm. Singh, 89, had been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in the Uttar Pradesh capital since July 4. On Friday, his condition deteriorated, following which he was placed on dialysis.
