Aligarh: The Aligarh police has arrested Hindu Mahasabha leader Pooja Shakun Pandey and her husband Ashok Pandey from Tappal, Uttar Pradesh, for recreating the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary on January 30.

National Secretary of All India Hindu Mahasabha, Pooja had shot at an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi, with an artificial gun with with red liquid, after which 'blood' could be seen oozing out of the effigy. The members of Hindu Mahasabha, later, garlanded Gandhi's assassin, Nathram Godse, who killed Gandhi in 1948, and distributed sweets among party worker.

After the video of the incident went viral on social media, the cops booked Pandey her husband Ashok and 12 others under section 147,148,149, 295A and 153A for rioting, promoting enmity and hurting feelings of a section of society.

The day, however, is celebrated throughout the country as Martyrs' Day but Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha has always been celebrating Gandhi's death anniversary as 'Shaurya Divas'.

Earlier, three people were arrested after a video of a Hindu fringe group's workers shooting an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi with an air pistol went viral.

This is not the first time that Pandey has sparked controversy. Last year in August, Pandey had said if she was born ahead of Godse, she would have killed Gandhi.

Making the controversial statement, Pandey also warned the followers of Gandhi and said she will shoot anyone if they try to become another Mahatma. She also blamed Gandhi for the partition of the country which led to the death of several lakhs of Hindus.

As per the police reports, the suspects allegedly belonged to the right-wing All India Hindu Mahasabha.
