Fatehpur: Former Samajwadi Party MP from Fatehpur, Rakesh Sachan, on Saturday triggered a controversy by inaugurating a semi-constructed railway bridge here.

After coming across the development, the police took Sachan's vehicle along with its driver to the police station for interrogation.

It may be mentioned that the previous Samajwadi Party government had passed order for the construction of a railway bridge on the Khaga-Kishanpur route.

On being approached over the same, Sachan said, "He was the one who got clearance for the bridge. On Satuday, some party workers informed him that the construction of the bridge had already completed but commutation of vehicles over the same was still prohibited because no one had inaugurated it."

"I immediately rushed to the spot along with the SP workers to cut the ribbon and open it for public use," he added. The act, however, sparked a turmoil in the state as BJP workers started criticising the move.

Taking the matter into cognizance, the inspector of the concerned police station said, "The former MP had inaugurated the bridge, constructed by UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd, illegally and without the required permission. We have registered a case under the relevant sections."

Station in-charge AK Rai said that a case has been registered against more than a dozen people for disrupting government’s work and risking people's lives. "FIR has been registered and appropriate action will be taken against those found guilty," he said.

District Magistrate Madan Pal Arya and SP Kavindra Pratap Singh also came into action after coming across the incident and immediately ordered to stop commutation on the bridge.
