Disaster Management

In a bid to bolster disaster management and ensure swift response in times of emergencies, the government of Uttar Pradesh has announced plans to establish four regional disaster response centers. These centers will be strategically located in the east, west, Vindhya, and Bundelkhand regions of the state, with a focus on quick and efficient relief and rescue operations.

The government spokesperson revealed that the proposed centers, to be set up in Gautam Budh Nagar, Varanasi, Jhansi, and Gorakhpur, will not only serve as hubs for immediate action during disasters but will also conduct training camps. These training initiatives aim to enhance the preparedness and capabilities of response teams, ensuring a more effective and coordinated approach to handling emergencies.

Two sites have already been identified, while efforts are underway to finalize the locations for the remaining two centers. The Public Works Department (PWD) has estimated the project cost at Rs 11 crore, awaiting approval from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to commence construction. Once operational, Uttar Pradesh will become the first state in the country to have four regional disaster response centers.

Sudhir Garg, Additional Chief Secretary for Revenue, emphasized that the decision to establish these regional centers is crucial for ensuring swift action during the "golden hour" of a disaster. Each center will have a specific coverage area, with Gautam Budh Nagar addressing the western parts, Gorakhpur for the east, and Varanasi and Jhansi catering to the Vindhya and Bundelkhand regions, respectively.

The centers will not only focus on immediate response but also facilitate real-time information exchange, coordination with other agencies, and community participation. A communication center is slated for construction to facilitate seamless coordination, while a resource center will be established for storing essential equipment required for relief and rescue operations.

Efforts are also underway to engage local experts for better management and coordination. The reduction in response time is expected to lead to improved coordination between various agencies involved in rescue work. With separate sections dedicated to training, emergency operations, and community participation, these centers are designed to be comprehensive hubs for disaster management.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach by Uttar Pradesh in enhancing its disaster management capabilities, setting an example for other states to follow suit. The establishment of these centers aligns with the broader goal of fostering a safer and more resilient community in the face of unforeseen challenges.
