New Delhi: The results of the by-elections held on seven assembly seats in the country were announced today. The BJP has won on three of these seats, but it faced a major defeat against the SP candidate in the Ghosi Assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh. In Ghosi, SP candidate Sudhakar Singh defeated BJP candidate Dara Singh Chauhan. BJP has also secured victories on two assembly seats in Tripura and one in Uttarakhand.

In Kerala, the Congress achieved success, while in Jharkhand, the Dumri Assembly seat saw a significant outcome in favor of Jharmumo. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee's party, TMC, emerged victorious. Interestingly, TMC managed to win this seat in West Bengal against the BJP.

The defeat faced by the BJP in Ghosi is considered a major setback, with political implications for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Jayant Chaudhary, and Pradesh Congress see this as a victory for the India United Alliance. Akhilesh Yadav stated that it should be seen as a victory not only for the SP candidate but also for the India United Alliance, and he believes the same result will be seen in the future.

In Bagheshwar, Uttarakhand, the assembly seat saw a tough competition between BJP and Congress candidates from the beginning. Both parties put in their full effort during the elections, and it showed during the vote counting. BJP candidate Parvati Das defeated Congress candidate Basant Kumar with 2,810 votes. This by-election took place after the untimely demise of BJP Minister Chandan Ram Das in April 2023. In the previous 2022 assembly elections, Chandan Ram Das had won by nearly 11,000 votes.

In Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Dumri Assembly seat witnessed a remarkable victory for Jharmumo. Jharmumo candidate Baby Devi defeated AJSU candidate Sakhi Yashoda Devi, who was supported by the NDA, in a landslide victory. After the win, Baby Devi's son Akhilesh Mahato congratulated her and expressed that his mother's victory would fulfill the unfinished work of former Chief Minister Sw. Jagarnath Mahato. This victory reaffirms the dominance of the Saffron Alliance led by Hemant Soren in the state.

In Kerala, the Congress tasted success in the Puthupally Assembly seat by-election. Congress candidate Advocate Chandi Oman defeated the incumbent CPI(M) Chief Minister with more than 36,000 votes. This defeat is a significant setback for the Left Front alliance in India, which includes the CPI(M) along with the Congress.

In Tripura, the BJP secured victories on both the Boxanagar and Dhanpur Assembly seats. In Boxanagar, BJP candidate Tafazzul Hussain won by a significant margin of 34,146 votes. In Dhanpur, BJP candidate Bindu Debbar defeated CPI(M) candidate Koushik Chanda by a margin of 18,871 votes.

In West Bengal, TMC displayed its strength by defeating BJP in the Dhupguri by-election. TMC candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy defeated BJP candidate Tapasi Roy in a closely contested battle. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and TMC leader, declared this as a significant victory for her party.

These by-election results have garnered significant attention as they may have implications for the larger political landscape in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
