New Delhi: The mother of Nirbhaya, the infamous 2012 gangrape victim, on Thursday thanked Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for guiding her son to become a pilot, said the sources.

It may be recalled that a 23-year-old student was brutally raped by six men back in December 2012 in the national capital. The injuries she sustained during the inhuman act were so severe that she succumbed on December 29 at a hospital in Singapore.

"My son is a pilot now because of Rahul Gandhi," the mother said. "Rahul Gandhi was the one who counselled him and motivated him to achieve something good in life to support the family."

Nirbhaya's mother further said that the Congress scion not only sponsored her son's education but also kept calling him frequently to motivate him.

“Rahul used to talk to him over the phone and taught him to adopt a ‘never quit’ attitude.” She said Rahul Gandhi’s sister, Priyanka, also called and inquired about the family’s well-being.

The gangrape had shook the entire country so badly that protesters came on the roads demanding swift action against the guilty. The incident also gave Delhi the tag of 'The Rape Capital of India'. Significantly, one of the six rapists was a juvenile at the time.

Earlier this year on May 5, the Supreme Court had upheld the death sentence for all four convicts, while the juvenile had been released in December 2015 after serving three years in detention home and another convict had died in prison.
