Lucknow: The music lovers across the country on Saturday observed the 92nd birth anniversary of Madan Mohan, one of the greatest music directors in the history of Bollywood.

Among others, Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar took to the micro blogging website, Twitter, to fondly remember the legendary musician.

In fond memory of the musical legend, newztrack.com brings its readers some very interesting information about him:

  • Madan Mohan Kohli was born on June 25, 1924 Erbil of Iraqi Kurdistan. His father Rai Bahadur was an ‘accountant general’ in Kurdistan Peshmerge Forces.
  • Later, his family shifted to their home town of Chakwal and he attended school in Lahore for few years.
  • In Lahore, he learned the basics of classical music from one Kartar Singh for few months and Mohan, however, never received any formal training in music.
  • He then shifted to Bombay (now Mumbai) where he completed his secondary education from St. Mary’s School in Byculla.
  • His performances began broadcasting on All India Radio since he was 11-year-old.
  • He was given his first big break in the Bollywood flick Ankhen, released in 1950.
  • He shared a long-time collaboration with Lata Mangeshkar who came up to sing for many of his super-hit films.
  • Mangeshkar once dubbed him as ‘Ghazal Ka Shehzada’ (prince of ghazal).
  • He passed away following liver cirrhosis on July 14, 1975.
  • The musical legend’s unused tunes were recreated by his son, Sanjeev Kohli, for Veer Zara, the famous flick by Yash Chopra released in 2004.
