Celebrating Human Rights Day: A Reflection on 75 Years of Progress and Challenges

As Human Rights Day unfolds, the European Union stands alongside the global community in commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This historic document, adopted in 1948, serves as the cornerstone of our international human rights framework, influencing both national laws and global treaties, including the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) within Europe.

Human rights, rooted in the essence of every individual, transcend borders and cultures. Despite significant progress over the past 75 years, the world continues to grapple with crises, with women, children, and vulnerable populations disproportionately affected by the consequences of conflict and war.

The European Union underscores the importance of respecting, protecting, and fulfilling human rights as fundamental to justice, accountability, and the eradication of impunity. These principles form the bedrock of the EU's values and commitments. The EU remains dedicated to promoting universal respect for human rights through its external actions, condemning violations, discrimination, attacks on democracy, and restrictions on media freedom wherever they occur.

In tandem with the 75th year of the UDHR, the world also observes the 30th year of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action and the 25th year of the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders. These milestones recognize the indispensable role of human rights defenders in driving positive change and advocating for the realization of human rights.

Acknowledging the enduring relevance of the UDHR, the EU positions itself to face the challenges of the present and future, particularly in our increasingly digital world and amidst the impacts of climate change. As we celebrate this milestone, the European Union reiterates its commitment to the UN Charter, standing united with the United Nations and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as other multilateral and regional organizations, in advancing the full realization of human rights globally.

Emphasizing the goal of leaving no one behind, the EU reaffirms its dedication to promoting a human rights-based approach to development cooperation. Human rights are not abstract principles confined to paper; they represent universally applicable legal norms. They are the foundation of peace, offering a path towards a more just, equal, and inclusive society for the present, the future, and generations to come.

On this significant occasion, the European Union, echoing the sentiments of the UDHR, calls upon the global community to unite in upholding and advancing the human rights of every individual across the globe. As we reflect on the progress made, let us face the challenges ahead with unwavering determination, ensuring that human rights remain at the forefront of our collective endeavors.
