Lucknow: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Beni Prasad Verma on Friday joined the Samajwadi Party.

It is being believed that the party had invited him to join the party to lure the votes of other backward classed ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Political pundits have it that Samajwadi Party (SP) had offered him a Rajya Sabha ticket.

An old socialist:

  • Beni Prasad Verma, had started his political career on the ticket of Socialist Party in 1974 from the Dariyabad Vidhan Sabha seat of Barabanki district.
  • He had also served on the post of Telecom minister.
  • Verma formed Samajwadi Kranti Dal in 2007.
  • Joined Congress in 2009.
