Recently a Deepfake AI video of Rashmika Mandana has gone viral. Thousands of people on social media consider this fake video to be real because the expressions seen in it look absolutely real.

After this, Amitabh Bachchan and Rashmika expressed deep concerned on this. In a Twitter post, Rashmika wrote, 'Honestly, something like this is very scary not only for me but for each one of us. If this had happened to me when I was in school or college, I would not have even thought of dealing with it.

What is deepfake and how it is made?

The term deepfake was first used in 2017. Then videos of many celebrities using deepfake ID were posted on America's social news aggregator Reddit. It showed unnatural videos of actresses like Emma Watson, Gal Gadot, and Scarlett Johansson.

Fitting someone else's face, voice and expression into a real video, photo or audio is called deepfake. This happens so clearly that anyone can believe it. In this, even the fake looks like the real thing.

For this, AI and machine learning advanced technologies are used to create this type of video.

How it creates:

  1. First of all, such a photo or video is identified in which a fake face and voice can fit. Gathering all the faces is called the encoder algorithm and changing faces is called face swap.
  2. The second program is the decoder algorithm. The expression is inserted after the face swap. Then audio is added and work is done on each frame of the video so that the video looks real. One-second video is made up of 24 frames i.e. 24 images.
  3. Artificial Intelligence has made this work easier. There are some apps in the public domain on which you just have to upload a photo and a fake video or photo of the person concerned is prepared. Examples of this are many social video chat apps in which you put on a live mask or sometimes wear a crown to hide your face.
  4. Experts say that anyone can believe after watching videos that are made with perfect AI technology. According to a research conducted in USA, generally, 96% of AI based deepfake videos are used in making porn.

How to identify

  • Focus on the face and expressions.
  • Focus on face skin.
  • See whether the shadow of the body is reflecting right or not.
  • See the lip lip-syncing is natural or not.
  • Focus on eye blinking.
