The Unexpected App Deletion Trend of 2023

Social media platforms have undeniably become an integral part of our daily lives, with millions of users worldwide spending hours engaging with them. However, as the number of social media users continues to climb, a fascinating trend has emerged – the decline of once-popular apps. In 2023, despite their ubiquitous presence, social media apps faced the challenge of staying relevant.

A recent report by TRG Datacentres, a US-based tech firm, highlighted a significant downturn in the fortunes of Meta’s Threads app. Despite amassing an impressive 100 million users within five days of its launch in July 2023, the app experienced an alarming 80% drop in daily active users. This decline prompted TRG Datacentres to conduct a survey to identify the most unpopular social media apps of the year.

The survey unveiled a surprising global trend – Instagram emerged as the most deleted app in 2023. Over 1 million users worldwide actively searched for 'how to delete (my) Instagram account' each month, averaging more than 12,500 searches per 100,000 people globally. This shift in user behavior signifies a dynamic change in preferences, indicating a demand for platforms that resonate authentically and cater to evolving needs.

TRG Datacentres conducted the research by focusing on the nine most popular social networks globally, as reported by Statista.com. Analyzing data over 12 months, researchers measured the monthly average searches for 'how to delete (my) account' alongside the user base of each app. This data was then compared against the global population to determine the number of searches per 100,000 people.

According to the findings, Instagram led the pack with 1,020,000 people looking to delete their accounts in 2023. Snapchat followed with 128,500, Twitter with 12,300, Telegram with 71,700, Facebook with 49,000, TikTok with 24,900, YouTube with 12,500, WhatsApp with 4,950, and WeChat with 2,090.

Despite Instagram's continued dominance with over 2 billion users worldwide, the researchers posit that developments over the years, the influx of ads, and influencers using it as a promotional space may have contributed to users seeking alternatives. If the trend of a million monthly searches to delete the app persists, it raises concerns about the platform's future popularity.

In conclusion, the shift in social media preferences observed in 2023 serves as a compelling indicator of users' evolving demands. As Instagram faces the challenge of being the most deleted app globally, it prompts a broader conversation about the need for authenticity and user-centric platforms in the ever-changing landscape of social media.
