Rolls-Royce develops unmanned ships in Finland

British Rolls-Royce is developing technologies for autonomous and unmanned ships in Finland, reports Finnish business daily Kauppalehti. The company expects the first prototypes to have their maiden voyages by the end of the decade.

The company firmly believes that autonomous ships will have a solid footing in the global marine traffic already in the 2030’s.

According to Oskar Levander, Vice President of Innovation at Rolls-Royce, Finland is an early bird in the unmanned ship technology. The joint industry-academia research project Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative (AAWA) was founded in February 2015.

The Rolls-Royce-led initiative includes various Finnish universities and research institutes, including Aalto University, Tampere University of Technology and Abo Akademi as well as VTT Technical research Centre of Finland and Finland Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation Tekes.
