2024 has witnessed a wave of layoffs in the tech sector, with approximately 157 companies letting go of around 40,000 employees in just two months. In a recent interview, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered insights into the reasons behind this unprecedented surge in job cuts. According to Zuckerberg, companies are recognizing the benefits of operating with a leaner workforce, a realization stemming from the adjustments required in the post-pandemic landscape.

In the conversation, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many companies, including Meta, overbuilt their workforce during the pandemic-induced surge in e-commerce. However, as the business environment returned to normal, these companies realized the need for rightsizing and had to resort to layoffs.

Addressing the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in job cuts, Zuckerberg explained that, in Meta's case, AI was not a major driver for the layoffs. While acknowledging that some tech firms may be restructuring to invest more in AI, he emphasized that overbuilding during the pandemic and subsequent efforts for efficiency were the primary factors leading to layoffs across the tech industry.

On the topic of Sam Altman's ambitious venture to raise $7 trillion for building semiconductor infrastructure to power AI systems, Zuckerberg expressed admiration for Altman's vision in the AI space. However, he deemed the proposed investment as 'astronomical.' Zuckerberg believes that while Altman's vision is valuable for progress in the AI sector, the scale of the investment might be a point of contention.

Zuckerberg delved into Meta's future products, emphasizing the need to stay competitive, provide open access, and foster social connections through technology. He also discussed his hands-on management style and addressed criticisms, remaining optimistic about Meta's trajectory in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
