New Delhi: Ireland, in a major attack on WhatsApp, on Thursday imposed a fine of $ 266 million, or about Rs 1,942 crore. This messaging app was accused of sharing user data with other companies of its proprietary company Facebook and not being transparent about it. This fine has been imposed under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) made three years ago.

WhatsApp Privacy Policy:

The Data Privacy Commissioner (DPC) was investigating the allegations on WhatsApp. He issued a statement that it was investigated whether WhatsApp is complying with the 2018 EU data rules on transparency. This also includes giving information to users about the information and data shared by WhatsApp with other companies of Facebook.

WhatsApp spokesman Joshua Breckman said the fine was unfair, saying it would appeal. He does not accept this decision.

Fine of Rs 1942 Crore:

Corporate tax rates are low in Ireland. That's why there are European headquarters and offices of twenty companies including Facebook, Google, Twitter, Apple. Ireland has been accused of not wanting to take the displeasure of companies.

Even in the present case, the initial fine was being kept at around 433 crores, but the rest of the EU countries pressed for it to be increased, increasing it by about five times. The latest order has prompted other countries to take similar action.
