Millions of devices, starting today, may be unable to connect to the internet. An extensive collection of vintage Apple Macs and iPhones, Nintendo 3DS game systems, Sony PlayStation 3, and even some PlayStation 4 consoles, and a significant number of smart TVs are included in this collection. The TV Setup box is also included in this list. The internet connection on many of these devices may be lost owing to the reported expiration of a critical digital certificate. Certificates play a vital role in ensuring that secure Internet connections are established.

This implies that individuals who do not have devices that have the necessary digital certificate will be unable to take advantage of functions such as checking emails on over-the-top services such as Netflix, surfing popular websites, or viewing movies and television programs.

The digital certificate may expire, causing the Internet to become unusable for millions of devices. This IdentTrust DST is referred to as the root CA X3. This certificate allows Internet users to securely connect to websites that begin with the HTTPS protocol. It protects the connection between the device and the Internet by encrypting the data. Let's Encrypt, a non-profit company, was responsible for the creation of the IdentTrust DST root CA X3 certificate.

These devices will be impacted

According to the report, devices that may experience internet connectivity issues include older generation products such as MacBook and Windows XP laptops, iPhones that are not running iOS 10 or higher and are running an older version of macOS 2016, old gaming consoles such as the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo 3DS, and old smart TVs and set-top boxes. Customers who have not yet gotten a fresh firmware update for their PlayStation 4S may also be impacted.

Even though Android has a "long-standing and well-known problem with operating system upgrades," according to Let's Encrypt, there is a solution that may avoid the majority of devices from being affected by the expiration. It was this year that the company made the switch to its own ISRG Root X1 certificate, which will remain valid until 2035. While many Android devices, specifically versions of Android (Nougat) 7.1.1 and earlier, are still unable to trust this certificate, Let's Encrypt has obtained a cross-signature for its certificate that is valid for three years longer than the signing root, ensuring that the vast majority of Android devices will remain bug-free for the foreseeable future.

Users will be required to download and install the appropriate updates. Users of Android devices will need to install Nougat 7.1.1 and then browse with trusted root certificates by using the Firefox web browser to complete their tasks.
