In 2021, the automobile sector was named after SUVs. Several SUVs hit the Indian market this year. Some of them were brand new models while many models were launched with updates. In the last few months, compact, sub-compact, and mid-size SUVs have created a stir in the Indian automobile market. Let us know about the top five SUVs launched in 2021, which broke several records at the time of launch.

Hyundai Alcazar

Hyundai launched its 7-seater SUV Alcazar in June this year. Alcazar, which was launched with a starting price of Rs 16.30 lakh, received a tremendous response. Within a month of its launch, Alcazar had received more than 11,000 units of bookings and during this period it had sold 5,600 units. The car is available with six variants - Prestige, Prestige (O), Platinum, Platinum (O), Signature, and Signature (O).

New Tata Safari

Tata launched the new XTA Plus variant of its popular SUV Safari in August this year. The new variant of Safari was also highly appreciated due to its popularity in the Indian market. Coming to the features, Tata Safari XTA Plus has a panoramic sunroof, 6-speed automatic transmission, iRA connected car technology, and a lot of safety features. Safari XTA Plus offers a 2.0 litre cryo-tech diesel engine and is available for Rs 20.08 lakh.

Mahindra XUV700

Mahindra launched its popular XUV700 in September with a total option of 34 trims. More importantly, according to the company, within 57 minutes of the start of the booking, the company had received 25,000 bookings for the car. XUV700 diesel and petrol engines are available in options and with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, its starting price has been fixed at Rs 17.59 lakh.

Tata Punch

The festive season In October Tata launched its micro-SUV punch which hit an initial price of Rs 5.49 lakh. The SUV, which has already rocked the Indian bar with its five-star NCAP ratings even before its launch, includes four trims- pure, adventure, accomplished and creative. The punch comes with a 5-speed manual or automatic gearbox with a 1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 1.2 litre turbocharged petrol engine.

MG Astor

It was only in October 2021 that MG Ester knocked out the level 2 ADAS technology for the midsize SUV segment for the first time. People were curious that within 20 minutes of the official start of the booking, all 5,000 units of this year were sold. Astor has priced at Rs 9.78 lakh, which goes up to Rs 16.78 lakh for the top variant, and has infotainment system in-car connectivity features.

Sales of SUVs exceeded the rest of the segment this year

SUVs are being liked the most by Indian customers in the car segment. Compact, sub-compact, and mid-size SUVs account for about 51.58 percent of the Indian car market. This means that every other car sold in September 2021 was an SUV. Coming to September alone, a total of 64,235 units of hatchback and sedan cars were sold in the passenger vehicle segment, while a total of 87,720 units of SUVs were sold.
