Avani Lekhara won the gold medal equalling world record score in the final.

It was a shot at history as India won its first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics on a day when medals kept coming the country's way at some pace. Avani Lekhara won India's first medal in shooting at the Tokyo Paralympics in the women's 10m air rifle standing SH1 event on Monday. Lekhara won the gold medal with a total score of 249.6 in the final, equalling the world record. This is India's fourth medal at the Tokyo Paralympic Games so far.

The 19-year-old also scripted history becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympics. Overall, she is the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016), and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016).

Yogesh Kathuniya wins silver medal in men's Discus throw event

India's Yogesh Kathuniya bagged the silver medal in the men's Discus throw (F56) event on Monday by registering his best throw of 44.38m in the final at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics in Japan. Kathuniya was only bested by Brazil's world-record holder Batista dos Santos Claudiney who registered a throw of 45.59m to win the gold medal.

Devendra Jhajharia wins silver, Sundar Singh Gurjar wins bronze in men's javelin throw event

India's Devendra Jhajharia won the silver medal in the men's javelin throw - F46 final event on Monday at the Tokyo Paralympics with his best throw of 64.35, while Sundar Singh Gurjar won the bronze medal in the same event with his best throw of 64.01. The duo took India's total medal tally at the Paralympics 2020 Games to seven.

On Sunday, which was celebrated as Nationals Sports Day in the country, saw three athletes bring home a medal. The day began with star paddler Bhavinaben Patel winning a silver in women's singles table tennis class 4.

Later that day, high jumper Nishad Kumar, with the best jump of 2.06m, won silver in the T47 event by setting an Asian record. Soon after, Vinod Kumar bagged a bronze medal in the Discus throw F52 event. With a throw of 19.91m, he too set a new Asian record.
