New Delhi: Nishad Kumar clinched a silver medal in the men's high jump T47 event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 on Sunday. He made a jump of 2.06m and also went on to create an Asian record as the event turned out to be a good affair for the Indian para-athlete.

After winning the silver, the first thanks he gave to his mother Pushpa Devi. His hand was amputated in 2007 by a mower, but it was his mother who never stopped Nishad from playing.

Nishad Kumar wins Silver Medal:

Nishad said that he would put this medal around his mother's neck. This medal won on National Sports Day is dedicated to him and all the countrymen. Despite his hand being chopped off, his mother never allowed him to realize that he was a disabled person. She inspired him to play. The fear was also removed from his mind that he would get hurt by playing. He became a player only because of his mother.

Gives credit to his Mother:

Nishad, six feet four inches tall, from the Budaun town of Amb in Himachal Pradesh, remembers when a teacher at school asked him to take up high jump because of his height. When he was going to Panchkula for good training in 2017, his parents, who worked in the fields, sent him by paying only Rs 2500.

He later came to know that his parents took loans from people and from banks for his preparations. Never told them about it. Twenty-two-year-old Nishad wants to get a government job after this medal. He wants to gift his mother a government job. Presently he is studying at Lovely Professional University near Jalandhar.

Nishad did not even know about Para Games till 2016. He continued to compete with ordinary athletes till 2018. When T Mariyappan and Varun Bhati won medals in the high jump at the Rio Paralympics, the villagers told them that they too could try their luck in it. It was only after this that he took up para athletics. He was ranked 10th in the National Athletes' School.
