Sri Lanka vs India Second ODI: A sneak peek into the records book

Kandy: Several previous records were broken and new ones were established in India's 3-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a thrilling encounter at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium here on Thursday.

Where Lankan spinner Akila Dananjaya bagged six wickets for 54 runs to rip apart the formidable Indian batting lineup, experienced MS Dhoni shared the crease with Bhuvneshwar Kumar in an unbeaten 100-run partnership for eighth wicket to sail the sinking Indian ship to safety. It was the highest ever eighth wicket partnership for India in ODIs.

Here we have mentioned some of the interesting records the players from both the countries established:

  • MS Dhoni played an unbeaten 45-run knock off 68 balls. It was a record 120th occasion in International Cricket when the former Indian captain remained not out. He has surpassed great Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan (119 no outs) to achieve the milestone. He has 71 not outs in ODIs, 33 in T20Is and 16 in Tests under his belt.

  • MS Dhoni set up another record in the match by stumping Danushka Gunathilaka off the bowling of Yuzvendra Chahal. He equaled Kumar Sangakkara's record of 99 stumpings in International Cricket. Dhoni, however, is the quickest to achieve the feat.

  • Rohit Sharma, who scored 54 runs off 45 balls with five fours and three sixes in the match, became the 14th Indian batsman to complete 8,000 runs in International Cricket. He reached to the milestone on completing 13 runs in his inning.

  • Jasprit Bumrah bagged four wickets for 43 runs in his 10-over spell in the match. It was third occasion in his 18 ODIs when he bagged four wickets in a match. He is just the fourth Indian bowler to complete the feat after Narendra Hirwani, Ajit Agarkar and Praveen Kumar.

  • It was the 300th International match for Indian skipper Virat Kohli. During his 9-year-career, he has played in 191 ODIs, 60 Tests and 49 T20Is. He, however, could not make the match a memorable one as he got out after scoring 4 runs off 2 balls.

  • Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan added 109 runs for the first wicket in the match, taking their total number of hundred-run partnerships to 11. The pair holds the third spot in the list of highest number of hundred-run partnerships by Indian openers, only after legendary Sachin Tendulkar-Sourav Ganguly (26) and Sachin Tendulkar-Virender Sehwag (11).

  • Dhawan, however, missed to complete a milestone by a whisker as he got out at 49 off 50 balls. If he could score one more run, he would have become only the second player in history to score seven 50+ scores against an international team.

  • India had lost its first wicket at 109 runs in form of Rohit Sharma and within 22 runs, it lost six more wickets, and were reduced to 131/7. India took just 32 balls to lose those seven wickets, worsening their previous record of losing seven wickets in 28 runs against New Zealand in 2010.

  • Akila Dananjaya took 13 balls to take five wickets. His first wicket was Rohit Sharma off his 15th delivery and took his fifth wicket off his 27th delivery. Since 2000 there are three bowlers who have taken five wickets in fewer number of deliveries. Mohammed Sami took five wickets in the space of 11 balls against New Zealand in Lahore in 2003.

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar not only partnered the crease in a 100-run partnership but also completed his maiden half-century in ODI Cricket.

  • Akila Dananjaya had five bowled and lbw dismissals in the match, joint highest for a spin bowler since 2000. Afghanistan's Rashid Khan was the last bowler to achieve this against West Indies in Gros Islet earlier this year.

By overcoming the Dananjaya-threat, India has somehow managed to continue its winning momentum on the Sri Lanka trip. After completing a 3-0 whitewash in the Test series, India has won first two ODIs of the five match series.
