India's star tennis player Rohan Bopanna, along with his Australian partner Matthew Ebden, has won the men's doubles title of Australian Open 2024.

The pair of Rohan Bopanna-Matthew Ebden won the title by defeating the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavasori 7-6, 7-5.

At the age of 43, Bopanna also became the oldest player to become a Grand Slam champion in men's tennis. He broke the record of Jean-Julien Roger, who had won the French Open men's doubles trophy with Marcelo Arevola in 2022. Bopanna has won the men's doubles title for the first time in the last phase of his career.

The match was so tight at Rod Lever Arena that there was only one break of serve, when Vavasori dropped serve in the 11th game of the second set. There were not many break points in this either. The second seeded pair got break points in consecutive games in the beginning of the match. But the Italian players saved both of them. In the second game, Vavasori volleyed on Boleli's serve at 30-30 but Bopanna hit a long return.

In the fourth game, the Italian players again fell behind by a break point when at 30-30, Bopanna's return shot bounced off the 'net cord' and fell down, giving the second seeded pair the point due to luck. But Vavasori saved this point too with good service.

Bolelli was looking under pressure at '30-all' while serving at 4-5. But he hit a powerful cross court forehand shot which went beyond Bopanna's reach and then the score became equal at 5-5. In the 11th game, pressure came on Ebden in which he had to face breakpoint but after playing deuce point, the Australian player ended the game with an ace. Then in the tie breaker, Boleli's serve was broken twice and the Bopanna-Ebden pair took a 5-0 lead without losing a single point on their serve.

Bopanna will become the number one player in the ATP rankings to be released on Monday.
