New Delhi: Mohammad Shahid, who brought laurels to the nation in the field of Hockey, left for his heavenly abode on July 20 at the Medanta Medicity hospital in Gurgaon. He was 56.

Shahid, an exceptional Hockey star from India, was admitted to SSL hospital at Banaras Hindu University after complaint of severe stomach ache. He was later shifted to Medanta after his health deteriorated. Severe liver condition and Kidney failure is said to be the major cause of his death.

He is survived by his wife Parveen Shahid and children Mohammad Saif and Heena Shahid.

Former Hockey team skipper Dhanraj Pillay had earlier appealed to the Prime Minister seeking help for the treatment of the veteran Hockey star. He later thanked Modi, Indian Railways, where Shahid was an employee, and Sports Ministry for providing financial assistance to Mohammad Shahid.

• Shahid entered the international Hockey world at the age of 19 in 1979 against France at the Junior World Cup tournament

• He garnered fame during a four-nation tournament in Malaysia

• He left the Pakistan players stunned with his skills

• His role was crucial in the team that won gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics

• Mohammad Shahid soon became the India’s face in Hockey and bagged enough fan following

• Shahid also captained the Indian Hockey team during 1985-86 season

• He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 1981

• Shahid was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1986
