Germany launched their Women's World Cup campaign by thrashing debutants Morocco 6-0 in a match completely dominated by the German girls.

For Germany, captain Alexandra Popp, who was ruled out of the Euro 2022 final owing to injuries, scored twice, which included two fantastic headers in the first half.

It was a comfortable victory for world number two side Germany, who are heavy favourites to top Group H.

The other goal was scored by Klara Buhl, who pounced on a rebound shortly after the interval to extend the lead. Morocco also suffered the ignominy of a self goal when Hanane Ait el Haj and Yasmin Mrabet poked into their own net on separate occasions.

German strikers posed problems for the Moroccon defence and substitute Lea Schuller added a sixth, firing it into an empty net after a swift counter-attack on the right to complete the rout.

Morocco was among the eight teams which made their debut in the tournament. A few of their players did display brilliance but they were nowhere close to the German strikers.
